I would give my eye teeth to see a whale breach like that!! I've been on several whale watching trips and they never breach for us! Gorgeous shot!

Location
In the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja California, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.Time
This was a sunny morning around 10 am. We were on a Cabo Expeditions Whale Watching excursion and Captain Jose had us in great position to photograph this female and her calf.Lighting
it was an absolutely gorgeous day out on the water. Conditions were near perfect.Equipment
I was using a Canon Rebel XT with a kit lens, 75-300mm lens, hand-held.Inspiration
Captain Jose was watching the whales come up from his elevated vantage point and would point me to the right place with a clock position and a countdown so I new exactly when and had a pretty good idea of where, the whale was going to breach.Editing
i lightened up the shadow in Lightroom a bit to bring out some more detail. In my camera bag
I have since upgraded my equipment quite a bit since this shot five years ago. And I have become a professional equine photographer in the interim. Although I still go to Cabo every year and photograph whales. My bag now consists of a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 7D Mark II. My primary lenses are a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM.Feedback
if you want to capture these types of images, I recommend a trip to Cabo San Lucas between December and April. Make sure you have a captain who is experienced, the good ones know how to position the boat for you to get the best shot. The best Captain I have been out with on a dozen trips over the last five years, is Captain Jose of Cabo Expeditions.
