Behind The Lens
Location
The woods of Colorado, USA.Time
This was taken at 6:35am in our campsite. We were packing our gear for the day's activities when the sun came over the mountain and shined through the trees.Lighting
Natural lighting with a wide open aperture.Equipment
This was a handheld Sony a7rIII with a 24mm lens (and 20% diffusion filter) at f/2.8 for 1/125 (160 ISO). No other gear needed.Inspiration
This image perfectly summed up a week-long camping trip in the woods of Colorado. I was inspired by both the sun finally coming up over the mountain to shine into our site and the height difference of where the camera and the subject were positioned, which allowed me to prioritize the grandness of the forest we were entering.Editing
I wanted the image to be much warmer than the 6:35am blue hour allowed. I played around with the temperature, and adjusted the yellows/oranges/greens to the desired effect in Lightroom. I also softened the blacks with the point curve and added a bit of blue to the shadows. In my camera bag
I always have my Sony a7Riii body and two lenses. My favorite is the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 prime for its ability to expand the story around subjects. I also carry a Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 telephoto zoom because a lot of my paid work is shot from a distance. Accessories include a Profoto A1X flash and trigger, a simple light meter, diffusion lens, extra battery and charger, collapsible reflector (tucked inside an exterior panel of my backpack), grey card, and tabletop tripod.Feedback
Using a mound in the natural landscape got me much higher than the subject and allowed for a better angle from which to tell the story. Always be on the lookout for the best vantage point.
