Behind The Lens

Location

Outside my front door. Rural NW Pennsylvania, USA.

Time

Evening - Approximately 7:30 PM (19:30).

Lighting

Natural lighting from the low sun behind me.

Equipment

I used a Canon T7 with an older 500mm T-mount lens with adapter to fit the Canon T7, and a monopod.

Inspiration

I was actually attempting to capture a family of deer further away in a farm field, when I saw Mr. Bluebird land on the electric line, and just had to capture him in the light that was present. While he was not my intended photo, he was so colorful and posing so politely that I had to snap the photograph.

Editing

I did a very slight contrast adjustment, as well as lightened very slightly to correct the sky color. Also I added my watermark to the photograph, and a small crop.

In my camera bag

Usually I have my T7, a Canon 18-135mm IS Lens, a Canon 55-250mm IS lens, a 50mm lens, a non-Image stabilized 75-300mm lens, and when doing night photography a flash set up, using 4 flashes, one radio master and three slave units, controlled by radio receivers. The 500mm lens, as well as tripods/monopod are on planned trips and shots only. As my photography is mainly outdoors, I also carry a water bottle, rain jacket, sunblock lotion, a flash light, a small video camera and a radio receiver that can tune both emergency and weather channels, as well as aircraft and railroad bands when photographing them. I also pack items such as a lens cleaning kit, small first aid kit, aspirin, bee-sting kit and Benadryl, incase needed.

Feedback

My main advice, as well as the lesson I learned in capturing this photograph, is to not get so absorbed in your intended photograph shot that you lose awareness of what is around you. I only captured this photograph because I noticed him land on the wire, had I not noticed him land there, I never would have captured this photograph, as it was not my intended photo. So pay attention to your surroundings, an opportunity for a really nice photograph might present itself, that you would miss if not attentive to your surroundings.
