You have given the rather negative year 2020 a swing that is really (nice) positive, a contribution to the Year 2020 Collection. As always, the competition will be tough, which, as an added consequence, makes the victory taste very sweet. Good luck.

This is one of the nicest trains by CSX. I like their military and others that honor all. Great capture of a beautiful train!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as part of an organized night shoot session at the Lakeshore Railway Historical Museum in North East (near Erie) Pennsylvania, USA, during the 2019 "Night at the Rail Museum" event. (This is a annual event where the museum hosts a 48 hour long photo shoot for both members and public attendees.)

Time

This particular photo was taken at approximately 9 pm. (2100 hrs)

Lighting

This was a combination of overhead construction site style flood lights brought by the organizers and a separate set of spot lights used for filling shadow areas. All lighting was provided on site by the event organizers.

Equipment

This was taken with my Canon Rebel XS, a 18-55mm IS lens, set at 25mm, with a full 1 second exposure, using a tripod and wired trigger. Lighting was construction style overhead flood lights and a couple well placed spot lights, provided by the organizers. (Basic DSLR kit with added trigger and tripod was my only equipment.)

Inspiration

I specifically wanted this unit, as well as the other two that were also present, due to family and friends who have served in law enforcement, as first responders, and in the military. This particular shot, of the CSX honoring law enforcement unit, was special because of not only my love of all things trains, but also the significance the unit carries as a specially designed honor unit.

Editing

Only post processing was a quick crop and a slight white balance adjustment. (The construction style flood lights had cast a slightly yellow look.)

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon DSLR (now a T7) 18-135mm IS lens (my newest addition that replaced the 18-55mm used in the photo), a 75-300mm zoom lens, and a 50mm IS lens, a flash set up consisting of a Canon 430 EXIII-RT master flash, with a second off camera Canon 430 EXII flash and two Sunpak flashes (430-II look-a-likes), all triggered with Yongnuo YNE3-RX receivers. I also carry in my bag a lightweight rain coat, a flashlight, a radio for listening to weather bands as well as railroad, emergency, and aircraft bands, extra batteries for all, and a water bottle.

Feedback

Night time photo shoots can be tricky, as in this instance, all lighting was provided on-site by the organizers. Because there were many attendees, sometimes the lighting was not so great for the angle you were left with, so at events like this one, take many more photo's than you think you need, as some may not turn out quite as nice as you hoped. I varied the exposure time, and ISO speed, trying several different combos before I found "the one" that made everything "pop" just right. For those looking for night time shots without the option of the event I attended, a very sturdy tripod, radio triggered flash set, and a remote trigger to eliminate camera shake. At this particular photo shoot, we were near Lake Erie, which provides some occasional weather quirks, like the chilly breeze that occurred the night of this shot. While it was technically late June, the air temperature quickly dropped to below 50F, with a stiff lake breeze that gave a very chilly, damp feeling. While the day had started above 75F, it ended at close to 40F. So always pay close attention to the weather forecasts, and be prepared for the surprises they may not have mentioned, and dress appropriately. Lake shore weather in this area can be very different from inland weather, and can even vary greatly within a couple of miles, so have a plan on how you can deal with that. My plan included bringing both a jacket and a hoodie for warmth, to help block the chill in layers to cut the breeze better, as well as a sturdy tripod to combat the stiff breeze.
