Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a workshop in wildlife photography. We were in Finland to photograph the predators in Nordic nature. I am self-taught photographer, who has a passion for wildlife and landscape photography. Every day I am out I learn something new.

Time

We pretty much just had dinner and headed out to the photo blinds for the night. We stayed in the photo blinds from 17:00 until 07:30 the next morning. Just after setting up gimbal and getting the camera ready the bears started to show their presence. After a while this bear wanted a sip of water from the “small” lake, and there I was ready to shoot him ???? The photo was taken august 13 2019 at 18:50

Lighting

The lighting is natural and I did not use any flash or strobes.

Equipment

I used the Nikon D850 and Nikkor 200-400mm f/4 and I also used a gimbal that has a fixed mount in the photoblind I used.

Inspiration

For many years I have had a dream of photographing wild bears, and when one of my favorite wildlife photographers announced he was going to have workshop with bear photography. Then I knew this is something I MUST do! Being there and to see these fantastic creatures in the wild was spectacular. If you ever get the chance, I urge you to do it!

Editing

When it comes to wildlife photography, I always try to set the settings, so I get it right in camera with less things to correct in Lightroom. But when I saw it in LR I felt it was flat and a bit boring. So, I wanted to try out some color grading to make the colors better and fixed the horizon a bit also.

In my camera bag

For wildlife I only use one lens. I prefer a telephoto lens; now I use the Nikkor 200-400mm f/4 lens with the Nikon D850. I often leave my bag in the car, so I have less to carry with me. If I bring my bag with me, I always have my 70-200 and 24-70 lens incase I get close up to my subject or to make a landscape where the wildlife is the subject.

Feedback

Read up on the animals you want to photograph, learn their behavior and patience! Another thing that is important in wildlife photography is slow movements, so you don’t scare the animals away.
