This photo was taken from a photo blind where there are placed out bird feeders and nuts to attract small bird and squirrels. I rented this photo blind for a day from Dalen Villmarkssenter in Norway.Time
This image was captured at the best time of the day, during sunrise when you get the nice golden light from the sun as it rises above the horizon. In the winter we have "late" sun rise here in Norway so it was shoot at around 9 am.Lighting
I wanted a photo where the woodpecker got some direct sunlight but at the sametime not too much, I think I got lucky with this one :)Equipment
This photo was shot with Nikon D750 and Nikkor 200-400mm f/4 lens. I also used a Gimbal that was fixed into a wooden "table" of the photo blind.Inspiration
When you have the chance to for a few hours to take photos of small birds, then you want to make the best out of it. As I took pictures I wanted to challenge myself to try new angles and maybe a vertical one?Editing
The picture was shot in Raw format, so I had to adjust the basic settings. Also I have blurred out the background in PS to create more depth to the photo. Done some shaperning with High Pass filter on the bird.In my camera bag
Usually I travel around with my Nikon D850 (D750 has been replaced) with Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8, Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 and Samyang 14mm f/2.8. I also carry around on NISI filters with the V5Pro filter holder. Also... you can never have enough lense cloths... Tripod I use MT055CXPRO4, solid carbon fiber tripod with ball head from Manfrotto HXPRO-BHQ6 magnesium + MSQ6PL.Feedback
photographing small birds like this is best during the winter when they have a harder time to find food, then it is easier to set up birds feeders and arrive when it is dark so they don't see you enter the photo blinds. bring some snacks and powerback to your phone and be quiet. always use slow movements, pretend to be an astronaut, this is to not scare birds or squirrels.
