Great composition and use of long exposure. How many stops was your ND filter?

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the margins of the Tagus River in Lisbon Portugal. I'd visited this spot before and decided to come back to photograph another human made formation. Unfortunately the tide was significantly different and the spot I had in mind was simply not possible. So I decided to stroll down river and came about this odd structures.

Time

It was late afternoon but the sun was still strong. I actually wanted to try out my 9 stop ND filters so I purposely wanted to shoot under reasonably strong daylight. Also this helped to ensure that there were no dark areas as I was actually shooting against the sun.

Lighting

I used a sturdy tripod essential for this long exposure especially as small waves kept hitting the tripod, a remote trigger and 9 stop nd filter. Exposure was done using live view which gives me and idea of exposure (albeit simulated up to 30 sec so above that it becomes a mix between experience and guess. This particular shot needed a 50 sec exposure.

Equipment

Canon 60D, 10mm lens, Lee filter, tripod and remote trigger

Inspiration

The beautifully aligned posts half submerged and a small rock made the perfect cenário. Also the high contrasts begged for a bw shot.

Editing

Shooting raw means that bw convertion I do during processing. Also so sharpening is essential and I admit that my old Tamron lens is not the sharpest.

In my camera bag

My bags content will vary depending on my objective. If seascape I'll take my 10 mm lens, filters, manfrotto tripod and trigger. I tend to plan ahead to make sure I only take what I need.

Feedback

High contrast shots with simple lines work well. I tend to prefer simple shots.
