Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot from the hide at Kumasinga waterhole in the Mkusi wilderness park in northern Kwazulu Natal. Kumasinga is especially popular with birders

Time

I had got to the hide at first light and waited through the morning quiet. At around 10:00am, as the heat of the day built up, game began to move down to water.

Lighting

The African light can be harsh and contrasty... but some high cloud helped soften the harsh shadow.

Equipment

ANikon D3 body with a Nikon 200~400mm f4G ED VRII (which I invariably use with VR turned off). Shot off a Badger beanbag from a hide.

Inspiration

A small family of zebra was drinking at the water edge when another herd came out the bush and approached. I knew the herd stallions were likely to challenge each other for control of all the mares and was ready when they came out to challenge each other.

Editing

simple B&W conversion from the raw, using Capture NX2

In my camera bag

I carry a pair of Nikon D3's and a range of prime lenses 24mm, 55mm macro, 500mm mirror. i also travel with the trinity of 14~24mm f2.8, 80~200mm f2,8 and 200~400mm f4g ED VRII. because much of wildlife shooting is off grid I carry 3 extra batteries per camera body, as

Feedback

The three most important things in nature photography is Patience, patience, and patience. Often you can sit in a waterhole hide and absolutely nothing happens for hours on end. People wander into the hide and when things are quiet, soon wander out again. But sooner or later all animals must drink... and the bush will come to you. The interactions, both intra-species and inter-species are often intense and over as soon as they start. Being aware of animal behaviours and alert to subtle changes and their signals helps one prepare for and anticipate those moments when individuals spark off each other and offer brief windows of intensity.
