This is a fascinating image. As an animal lover I am immediately drawn to it. But then I see that the lighting and tones are superb. Finally there is a geometric appeal and symmetry created by all of the legs and their reflections. Great capture!!

Good shot, though I think the color temp might be a bit too warm, like 100, maybe 200.

Location
Taken from an underground hide designed by Bence Mate on Zimanga private game reserve, Zululand South Africa.Time
The hide is set up for overnight sessions, but a late start meant by the time I got there the sun was up. The waterhole was rather quiet, but around 11;00am a small family of impala came down to drink and jostled around at the waterline.Lighting
The African midday sun is harsh and not always photo friendly, but some high cloud helped soften shadow and flatten contrast gradientEquipment
Nikon: D3camera lens; 80~200mm f2.8ED. Wimberly head on tripodInspiration
the natural symmetry forming and dissolving as the herd drank in small groups provided opportunities for unique perspectives and geometry that simply could not be ignored.Editing
This is a rework of an image previously uploaded with minimal post production. Here, I was simply in experimental mode and wanting to work the image to see what might be achieved in PP to enhance an image that stands well on it merits with minimal pp. I made 4 masks, each i stop apart thus. -2. -1.+1, +2 EV. These were merged to warm the tonal gradient across a full range range of 5 stops. In my camera bag
a couple of D3's. a range of prime lenss (old analog stuff I bought in the 1960's and 70's. 24mm f2.8, 55mm f3.5 macro, 500mm f5.6 mirror, as well as the trilogy of modern lenses: 14~24mm f2,8G ED. 80~200mm f2.8ED, 200~400mm f4G ED VRII. I also carry a metz mecablitz flash, ext tubes, reversal ring and a remote trigger. because much of m shooting is in the bush, away from amenities i carry about 5 camera batteriesFeedback
My philosophy in the bush is to as far as possible let the shot come to you. Pick a spot at a waterhole, or along an arterial game trail and just wait. Long periods of inactivity are interspersed with short , sharp bursts of intense activity. When preparedness and opportunity intersect, pics happen.
