While trekking through the highlands of Iceland, I had the chance to see some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes on the planet. This is a land of raw and sometimes unforgiving beauty, with it's lush green valleys, towering volcanoes and massive glaciers. At times, it truly felt like I had been transported to another planet. This shot was taken with a DJI Mavic Pro drone.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while backpacking through the remote highlands of Iceland.

Time

It’s difficult to judge the time of day by the photo, due to the clouds, but this was taken in the late afternoon.

Lighting

The low clouds and rain cancelled out anything that would be considered good light, but I felt the clouds also gave this image its own special feeling. The rain also saturated the ground, making the contrasting colors pop a bit more.

Equipment

This image was taken with the DJI Mavic Pro.

Inspiration

So many times that I’ve been to Iceland I’ve felt like I was on another planet. I really wanted to capture that feeling. I was flying the drone around, searching for interesting views. I was absolutely blown away by the variation in colors and textures this landscape scene offered.

Editing

The post processing on this image was fairly minimal. Basic Adobe Camera Raw adjustments, like color, shadows, and contrast. I also made a few adjustments in photoshop with luminosity masks to make fine targeted adjustments to some of the darker shadow areas.

Feedback

I think the beauty of this image is in the feeling of remoteness or that otherworldly feeling. The key here was just getting to this location in the first place. It took several days of backpacking with all of our camping gear, food, drone and camera gear, but the rewards were everywhere when it came to incredible landscape photography. It’s amazing what you’ll find when you get off the beaten path.
