A beautiful kitten that was playing around with his brothers in some debris in La Fortuna, San Carlos, Costa Rica. My niece and I were also playing with them and taking photos at the same time. I was specially enamored with this black cat and his beautiful blue eyes and eventually he gave me this pose.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in an animal rescue centre in San Carlos, Costa Rica. I forget the name of the place. The owner's cat had given birth to a litter of kittens a few days back and this is one of them. They were playing around, being cute and making my niece fall in love with them.

Time

We were taking a trip to this animal rescue centre and arrived there around noon. As soon as we got out of the car, my niece noticed these kittens and immediately became infatuated with them. I had lent her a small, fixed lens camera I had lying around so she could get started in photography and see if she liked it. We both followed the kittens to their playing grounds. I took out my camera and started taking pictures and this black kitten with these amazing blue eyes stopped, looked at my lens and stood there posing long enough so that I could take this shot. I was pretty happy with the result.

Lighting

Nothing special for this particular photo. It was taken with the natural lighting and no planning was involved.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 70D with my EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. I shot it hand held since there was no need for a tripod. No flash. There was nothing special about the light. It was a random situation so I couldn't do any planning. I did the best I could with what I had but I'm pretty happy with the result.

Inspiration

I was trying to teach my niece about photography and also watching over her to make sure she was safe. This black kitty caught my eye from the start. I like the color black and it's eyes were intensely blue. It created this great contrast and of course the cuteness of new born kittens was pretty captivating as well.

Editing

I shoot exclusively in raw format so I always do some post processing. Usually I do what I would call "normal" post processing which involves adjusting the colors, shadows, highlights, white balance, etc. For this photograph I did those things.

In my camera bag

I usually carry all my gear with me. That includes my canon 70D body, my 18-135mm, 50mm and 24mm lenses, an extra battery and a cleaning kit. Depending on the destination I might also have my tripod with me.

Feedback

I don't have any particular advice for this photograph since it was a random moment. I'd say try to carry your gear with you at all times, observe and take photos even if you think they might not come out that well or if you think the subject might be boring. You never know what can happen in a short moment. You might get lucky.
