Location
I took this photo from the shore of a small bay just to the east of Höfn, Iceland. I camped out on the side of the road just to be there in time and fortunately the wind cooperated with me that day.Time
This was taken at sunrise. I woke up about an hour before sunrise to walk out to the spot that I had scouted the previous evening. I remember being startled by a handful of caribou that were grazing near where I wanted to be. In my groggy state and in the dark, it was a bit unnerving at first but I quickly calmed down once I realized what was going on.Lighting
The lighting for this shot was a bit tricky as the sun was rising behind the mountain. Fortunately there was enough peaking around the side to give me a bit of light on the mountain face but not enough to wash out the reflection in the bay.Equipment
I shot this on a Nikon D3 with a Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 lens. I used a Slik tripod and a Nikon shutter release trigger.Inspiration
Honestly, the entire of Iceland is awe inspiring. Driving through the country, you want to stop every 5 minutes because it is just so gorgeous. I knew that I wanted to try to get some reflections of the mountains and since I was traveling through the country in March when most of the water is still frozen, I knew that this might be one of my only opportunities to get a great reflection.Editing
Yes, but not a ton. I used lightroom to bring out the shadows on the mountain face and tweak the contrast, blacks and whites. I also played with the white balance to get the colors that I wanted in the sky and water. In my camera bag
When shooting landscapes I almost exclusively shoot with my D3 and the 24-70 f2.8 lens. Depending on where I am going though I will also carry my ProOptic 14mm prime f2.8 for really wide shots. If I don't need to go too far while hiking (read under 4 or so miles from a trailhead), I will also carry my Nikkor 70-200 for some longer shots. I also always carry my shutter release cable, a circular polarizer and my 5 and 10 stop ND filters.Feedback
Particularly in Iceland, the weather changes so quickly so patience is absolutely necessary. The wind, clouds and rain can come out of seemingly nowhere and then just as suddenly disappear. I suggest finding a spot that you really like and, if you have time, wait it out.
