Behind The Lens

Location

My wife and I were on a weekend trip to Pennsylvania and were just outside of Chambersburg when this scene caught my eye. When I slowed down to turn around, my wife knew from experience that I had spotted a photo opportunity. She just smiled.

Time

As I mentioned, I was just driving by and had to stop. It was about 11:00 AM when I took the shot. I walked down off the road to get a better perspective and steadied my camera on a fence post.

Lighting

I knew at a glance that this image had the potential of being quite dramatic. The sharp contrast and the lone bare tree standing as a sentinel intrigued me. Fortunately, the air was clear with just enough clouds to filter the sun and soften any glare. The cloud shadows helped to give the image depth and character.

Equipment

I used a canon 6d with one of my favorite all purpose lens, a canon 24-105 F4.0. I didn't have my tripod so I just steadied it on a fence post.

Inspiration

I happened on this one purely by chance. Just a glance out the window, always looking for an opportunity wherever I find myself.

Editing

I really didn't have to do much with this one. The lighting was already very good. I just increased the saturation, contrast, and added a little structure.

In my camera bag

I usually have two bags, one for close up shots with a canon 7d equipped with a canon 100-400 F 4.5-5.6 and a canon 70-200 F2.8. I really like these lens on the 7d because of the cropped sensor and the fast shutter speed. In the other bag I have my landscape setup. I carry a canon 6d with my trusty 24-105 F4.0 and a wonderful little lens I came across that I love for night shots and wide angle requirements. It's a Rokinon 14mm fully manual. It takes a bit to get used to, but you can get some really great shots if you're patient and learn how to post process properly which I'm still learning how to do.

Feedback

If I'm on a road trip such as this, I like to go "hunting" with several scenarios in mind. I'm always looking for stand out objects (such as the lone tree), or leading lines such as old fences. I always keep an eye out for textures in old building and abandoned cars. Anything that I can see that has the stand out character or that will tell a story.
