Location
This photo was taken on at Portland Head Light, Maine on a short trip to Acadia National ParkTime
This was taken on a windy evening, and I mean really windy. I had to hang my heavy camera bag on the tripod to get it stable, even in a location shielded from most of the wind. It was just around sunset.Lighting
Nature did all the lighting here. I merely did a bit of dodge and burn in Photoshop to bring out the details in the rock. It was a soft, subtle light on the rock face while the sun was setting to the right sidelighting the lighthouse and throwing some light on the low clouds.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D with the Canon 24-105 F4L. The whole setup was on my Benro tripod and was triggered with a remote shutter release.Inspiration
The cliff face, along with the water breaking on the rocky beach made for lovely leading lines to the lighthouse. When the clouds caught the light from the setting sun, the composition unfurled before my eyes and it was so balanced that I just had to take the shot.Editing
I had to balance the highlights on the lighthouse and dodge/burn the rocks to bring out the details. Also applied sharpening selectively to the rocks to make them pop.In my camera bag
I carry too much equipment and can never figure what to leave behind :). I usually carry my Canon 6D camera and as many lenses my bag will fit - Canon 24-105 F4L, 16-35 F4L, 50 1.8 and Sigma 150-600 Contemporary as well as the Sigma 105 2.8 Macro lenses. I also carry a Hoya CPL and Haida 6 stop and 10 stop ND filters. The NDs are wonderful and I swear by them. A remote shutter release with intervalometer is also pretty indispensable.Feedback
Do not rush to take a photo. Take in the scene and especially the light. Try to anticipate where the light will be at the time you want to shoot it (usually around sunrise and sunset). Also dress appropriately for the weather, and then some. This was taken on a really windy winter evening and it was really cold. If I wasn't adequately dressed, I would probably never be able to take this photo. Inclement weather often offers the chance for beautiful photos, so weather it out :)
