Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from a bridge in Tommy Thompson Park on the Leslie Street Spit in Toronto while on a birding trip with friends.

Time

This was taken just after sunset on 6th December at around 6:30pm. I was returning from the day's birding session out on Tommy Thompson Park when I came upon this beautiful view of the Toronto skyline.

Lighting

I decided to shoot this just after sunset when there were some colours in the sky and the buildings were lit up too. Since there were no clouds, I included the reflections for interest.

Equipment

I shot this with my 6D and 24-105F4L combo. I wasn't carrying a tripod that day and had to place my camera on a pillar, and straightened the camera using the lens cap and my wallet. I bracketed exposures but ended up using only one as the light was balanced.

Inspiration

I love taking photos of cityscapes. Although I was not planning on this shot that day, the opportunity was too good to pass up, especially given the beautiful light at dusk with the buildings all lit up and a mist beginning to form on the water.

Editing

This photo didn't require much post processing. I played around with contrast and saturation using luminosity masks to get the colours just how I liked them.

In my camera bag

I usually have the Canon 6D, 24-105F4L and 16-35F4L all the time. Other lenses and equipment I take with me, depending on the shoot, are Sigma 150-600 C, Rokinon 14 2.8, CPL, Haida NDs and a wired remote trigger.

Feedback

Sunrise and sunset are the best times I find to capture cityscapes. I try to shoot at a time when there is still colour in the sky but the buildings are lit up too. This gives a more engaging photo. It is also a good idea to bracket your shots to get the entire dynamic range without compromising on image quality.
