Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Tommy Thompson Park in Toronto, Canada. It's a man made spit which juts out into Lake Ontario.

Time

This was taken at around 6 in the evening. I was with a couple of friends, looking to take some bird shots. It had been a disappointing day with very few birds spotted. I looked out over the lake and was amazed at the scene. Wonderful clouds, rain in the distance and the flocks of geese returning home for the day.

Lighting

The moment I took the shot, I knew it had to be in black and white to capture the mood. It was overcast, a bit darker than usual with patches of light showing through the clouds.

Equipment

Shot this with a Canon 6D and a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary.

Inspiration

The view looked magical. A solitary white yacht out on the lake, textured clouds over it throwing shadows on the lake and making the yacht stand out even more, flocks of geese flying by and the rain in the distance. It was like heavenly alignment and I knew I just had to take this shot.

Editing

Apart from the usual black and white conversion, I brought the exposure down a bit and enhanced the contrast to give it the look I desired. I also darkened the water a bit since I was not using a polariser and the water was reflecting a lot of light.

In my camera bag

A Canon 6D, with my trusty 24-105L, 16-35 F4L and the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lenses and Haida 10 and 6 stop square filters and a Hoya CPL. If I know I will be shooting at night, then I carry the Rokinon 14 2.8 and a Benro tripod, along with a remote trigger. And I always pack some food - trail mix, bars or just some pork sticks.

Feedback

We are usually so focused on the thing we want to shoot (birds for me in this example) that we often forget to look around and miss something magical. Always look for the light, and adapt to it.
