Location
This photo was taken at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.Time
The photo was taken at night time. Steel wool photos have to be done at nighttime in order to capture the full effect.Lighting
Not really since the steel wool provided all the lighting that was needed for the shot.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D7100 and Nikkor 18-140 mm DX lens. No flash was used. A tripod was used since the exposure was 13 seconds.Inspiration
I was attending a photo meet with a group of friends. A number of them brought steel wool and they decided to put on a light show for us.Editing
I did minimal post processing in Lightroom for the shadows levels of the photo. I also increased the saturation a little bit.In my camera bag
I know carry the following gear with me: Nikon D750, Tamron 24-70 mm 2.8 lens, Tamron 70-200 mm 2.8 lens.I also use a tripod from Sunpak for night photography.Feedback
When it comes to steel wool photography, a DSLR that excels in low light is a must, along with a quality lens. A sturdy tripod is vital since the exposures will run from 5 seconds to 30 seconds. A remote control for the shutter is also important since you don't want to shake the camera during shooting. As I mentioned before, night time is the only time you want to shoot steel wool photos. Make sure the surrounding area is clear of debris that may catch fire.
