I only just arrived in my new home country Finland, when the Nordic lights danced into the dark skies, creating a spectacle I could have only dreamed off before. It was breathtaking to watch, and even more spectacular being able to photograph it.
The way these Aurora waved itself through the endless sky was just pure magic.
The people around the campfire added something amazing to this photo. A true Finnish experience.

Location
This photo was taken at Fäbode beach, near Jakobstad in Finland.Time
It was on very cold and clear evening around 8pm.Lighting
Light is what photography is all about. And chasing these most amazing forms of lights in all its shapes while trying to capture it with the camera is what excites me at all times. Especially with the Northern Lights which are a true wonder, it is like a dream come true to be able to capture it in a very unique way.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D mark II with my 24 to 70mm lens f2.8 as well as my tripod.Inspiration
Photographing the Northern Lights has always been one of these things on my bucket list. After having captured the Lightning storms in the tropics of Australia I now moved to Finland. I was only here for 2 weeks when the Northern lights exploded above the skies here in Western Finland. This lighting show was very unusual for this part of Finland. As it was my forst time experiencing the Northern Lights, I still managed to get a few fantastic shots. It wasn't that easy as the lights move so fast and where I was standing (with my feet in the freezing waters), I still saw the most amazing reflections.Editing
Just a small crop.In my camera bag
I always carry my two Canon Bodies the 5Dmark II as well as my 7D. Then my 2 most used lenses for the outdoors. The 24-70mm and 70 to 200mm f2.8 lenses. My tripod is always there as well as my remote control. Then there is also my wide angle and my prime 50mm lens. Lately I have a new toy which is my Sony mirrorless , the Alpha 7 II.Feedback
Be determined and be patient. Follow the online Aurora tracker to make sure there is activity in your area, zone. But once there is some activity, be determined and get out there. Find a spot that is free of other disturbing light scources, focus on infinity, make sure your horizon is straight which is not easy when it is really dark in front of you and just have fun. It might take a while to get it right, but don't give up. The experimentation is all so worth it, when you do get that perfect shot.
