Winter is in full swing here in Oregon. Cold temperatures and snow have been covering the are since early December and I couldn’t be happier! The weather was pretty stormy for weeks and blocked the sun from breaking through. We finally had a break in the weather around the first of the year, so I wanted to put it to good use.
I went exploring around the Lake of the Woods area and pulled off at a favorite fishing spot, Fish Lake, right before sunset. I was surprised to see it completely frozen over! I walk around the shore line for a little, and saw footprints and cross-country ski trails heading all the way across the lake. Soon, the sun started to really set and the colors begin to come to life in the sky. I ventured out on to the ice and found some really interesting wind blown snow, uncovering the blue ice. The wind started to pick up, and the clouds really started to dance. I thought it would be a great time to throw on my 10 stop ND filter for some dramatic clouds.
This image was actually the first frame I shot once I was all set up. I tried to move around for a few different angles, but heard a few pops and cracks from the ice and quickly decided to wrap my shoot. I'm so happy the sun, clouds, colors, ice, and snow all came together for me. Once again, it was the right place at the right time!
