Behind The Lens
Location
West Virginia, Babcock State ParkTime
It was 0715 (7:15am) October 2015Lighting
The Sun comes up from behind you so in order to get the trees in color and the gris mill in shadow you have to time it right, otherwise your dealing with a lot of extra light on the gris mill and a ton of shadows that no ND filter could fix. Timing is everything, and it is a very crowded area so getting there early and staking a claim on a spot is Key!!!!Equipment
Canon 1D Mk III Tri-Pod 2 second Delay on shutter ISO 50 (low) Canon 28-135mm lens @ 28mm (manual focus) Number 8 ND filter / Circular Polarizer / UV filter F 18.0 Shutter 1.5 seconds No Flash - Mirror Lock up enabled.Inspiration
Saw a review in NAT-GEO about this park, it is about 6 hours from my house, so me and my dad decided on my day off to make a trek to the location. It was awesome. The park is beautiful, well taken care of but it is very busy during the fall, we went on a Monday and there were dozens of people there @ 0630 (6:30am)Editing
Post was just in camera raw, just a bit of highlight adjustment to turn down some hots spots but the photo was pretty darn good in camera, So I did little to it in Post.In my camera bag
Canon 1D with a Wide angle Lens / Canon 5D with a Prime lens / Sony A65 with a zoom lens Circular polarizers usually a number 4 number 8 and number 10 ND filters Cokin Style 4, 6, 8, & 10 and very unique ND filter I found oversea's it is circular, it has no name, but it is adjustable and it is awesome in some applications when the sun is just a tad too bright.Feedback
Patience. Lots of foot traffic and lots of tourists. find a spot and stay there. time of day CRITICAL LOW ISO, Polarizer a must, ND filter a must. Recommend Wide angle lens, 1 to 2 second exposure for water movement and sky movement. Check weather, make sure not going to be too windy. Park admission is Free. ISO 100 or lower. TRI-POD essential! F stop 4.0 to 18.0 depending on the light capabilities of your lens. stacking filters will lower the light coming into the camera and provide great colors, but it will soften your image. if your going for tack sharpness, loose the filters and shoot higher ISO and faster shutter, you will loose some of the calmness of the water. Saturdays in the falls, (call ahead) they run the mill, so water will run over the wheel on the mill, adding to the photo. It is a great drive down there from Pittsburgh, but it was well worth the trip. Happy shooting my friends!
