Location
This image was captured at Watkins Glen State Park in Watkins Glen New York, USA. This image is of Rainbow FallsTime
This image was taken Mid day believe it or not. But this gorge has such a huge canopy. The sun could be directly overhead and you could still take the shot. This was a 30 second shot from my tripod using a number 10 ND filter and a really dark polarizer filter. Controling the amount of light coming in was important to the rich colors and detail.Lighting
The gorge is deep. From the top to the bottom is about a 3000 foot drop in elevation. The gorge was formed in the last ice age as Glaciers moved across the land. Even at mid day sun with a good ND filter and a dark polarizer you can easily shoot all day in this location.Equipment
Canon 1D Mk II. Tripod, no flash. Timed exposure. No 10 ND filter. Dark polarizer. Wide angle lens.Inspiration
It just begs to be seen. God gave us a glimpse of heaven.Editing
Photoshop to fix and dust on the lens. 4% vibrancy and a small tweak of saturation. 10 positive on Sharpness. In my camera bag
Canon 5D MK II, Canon 1D MK III 200mm EF lens. 300mm zoom lens. Canon 24-72mm. Wide angle zoom. 50mm, 14mm prime lens.Feedback
Be patient. Take your time see what it is your trying to capture. There will be things in your frame you will need to deal with. Plants, people, rocks, look hard through your viewfinder. Check your image. Make sure you are capturing your vision of the scene. We are in 50mm. So remember there will be extra on either side you may not account for. Sometimes shooting longer will soften your image. Be prepared for the sharpness to be soft on longer exposures. 15 seconds. A medium tripod for sure. 30 seconds. A heavy tri pod will be a must. Solid foundation what are you putting your tripod into? This area has a lot of stone everywhere. Nothing is level. Nothing good can be rushed. Be patient. This trail on the weekdays has above average traffic. Don’t even try on the weekends. Monday Tuesday are my favorite days to go here. Lots of fitness walkers on this trail. If you go here by yourself. Travel light. The elevation changes and the steep angle of the gorge make for a tiring hike. You can camp in the park. I recommend parking at the top and walking down the trail. But the shuttle bus does not run from the bottom to the top when school is in. So your hiking down then back up.
