Location
This photo was taken in Verviers, Belgium. This building is situated across a secondary school so there was a lot of parents concerned about a guy with a camera contorting and twisting to get the best angle...Time
It was around 11 A.M. That was the only moment to get some light in a street next to this place. By noon the sun stroke the aluminium structure of the building. The construction being at the corner of the street, I stayed there 3 hours to have the light on both sides exposed at different anglesLighting
The sun can be quite low, even at noon in October, in Belgium which is perfect to hit flatly the most outward surfaces while keeping the rest in the shadows.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5200 and a Tamron 18-200 mm 3.5 / 6.3, nothing else.Inspiration
This building is quite unique in the neighbourhood. I had the series of pictures in my head for a couple of months before the light was correct enough to get it done. Even with the mix of shiny aluminium , I always thought of that place like a "Dark Tower". The dirty concrete give that impression, probably. That's why I wanted the heavy contrast of the highlights in the center from the noon sun and the shadows all around.Editing
I wanted a more golden/sepia tone for the series but I wasn't happy with the result. After playing with the temperature and the tint, I started again from the beginning and just rolled some of my own black and white presets in Lightroom. This one is heavy on Contrast and Clarity, Vignetting also to really give the impression the building sprouts out of the shadows. Then, I tuned the hue to get some "old paper" toneIn my camera bag
I usually roam around with my D5200 and the how so useful Nikon DX 35mm 1.8g, a Tamron 18-200mm in my bag. I'll add a flash, reflectors, fixations and a tripod only when I'm motivated or on a job. I'm just too lazy to carry my equipment all the time.Feedback
