Location
This photo was taken near my home in Ireland. Im an Amateur Photographer but I always carry my camera with me in the car incase I come accross something worth shooting.Time
The shot was taken one evening on my way home from work. I was driving along and could see the tree in a distant field and it looked interesting so I decided to try and make my way too it. When I got there it was just starting to rain so I had no time to set up my tripod, so the shot was taken handheld.Lighting
The clouds were very grey and uninteresting so I decided to take 3 exposures with a slightly longer exposure than normal to try and add a bit of movement in the clouds. This was quite difficult without a tripod and I knew I was going to be a bit disappointed whit the overall sharpness of the image.Equipment
The shot was taken using my Canon 70D and my EF 17 - 40 L lens. I also used a 5 stop screw on filter to slow down the shutter speed. I nolonger have this camera and Im eagerly awaiting my new Canon 80D to arrive.Inspiration
The opportunity to take this shot was by pure chance. I drive the same road home each day and had never noticed the tree in the distance before as the hedges along the road are usually high and had always blocked the view of this tree. On this day the hedges had been trimmed back to reveal this lovely tree. I just knew I had to go and invertigate there and then. Im so glad I did as when I got to the location I saw the tyre tracks in the field and knew it would help with my composition and make the shot a little better. I went back to this location about a week later to try and get more shots but by this time the wheat had been cut and the image would not have been as appealing.Editing
I imported my 3 images into lightroom and made some small adjustments to each. I then imported the 3 raw files into Photomatix to create a single HDR image. I might have went a bit overboard with the editing in Photomatix for some peoples taste but I wanted to give the image a more edgy/dark feeling and to make the tree more mythical. I will let my critics decide if I achieved this.In my camera bag
I usually carry with me all the time my 70D (soon to be 80D). My EF 17 - 40 L , my 50mm F1.8 and my Samyang 14mm. I also carry a few circular filters to fit the 17 - 40 lens. I would normally have my tripod with me also which is a Hahnel triad c4 compact.Feedback
Always have your camera with you if possible anywhere you are going, whether it be to work, the shops or evening leaving the kids to school as you never know when a previously unseen photo opportunity might reveal itself.
