Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a place known as Nohoval cove, in Cork, Ireland. I was looking for a dark sky area to get a shot of the Milky way but when I arrived at this destination it was extremely overcast with heavy clouds. So as you can imagine , the milky way shot was not going to happen.

Time

I arrived at Nohoval cove around 21:30 to try and set up before it got dark. As I said earlier I was there to take a shot of the milky way but it was to cloudy to get this shot. So I scouted around the area for a few hours until I came across this shot. The shot itself was taken around 23:30.

Lighting

The lighting was very poor so I took a number of exposures with the idea of blending them later to try and get as much out of the shot as possible.

Equipment

The equipment I used for this shot was my Canon 70D, fitted with a canon EF 17- 40 L lens. I also used a tripod as I was taking long exposures to try and get as much light in as possible as it was 23:30hrs and was fairly dark.

Inspiration

The reason I was drawn to this shot was the fact that all I could see the light of an oil tanker ship in the distance. In fact , that's about all I could see. I could make out the darkness of the cliffs but was unsure if the water was in the bay or not. So I was pleasantly surprised when I see the final results of my shots.

Editing

When I got back home I loaded the different exposures that I took in lightroom cc and made some minor edits to white balance, highlights, shadows & added a bit of vibrance. The images were then transferred to Photomatix and blended together as a HDR to produce the final image that you see.

In my camera bag

I normally carry with me all the equipment that I own which isn't much. I have my Canon 70d, my EF 17 - 40L and my EF 24 - 105L. I also always take a cleaning brush and cloth with me to keep the glass clean. I have one 10 stop screw type filter for long exposures during the day and 1 polarizing filter.

Feedback

My advise is just because you cant always see what you are taking a shot of does not mean that there is not a shot there. Take a number of different exposures and composition. Don't rush your shots. If you have time leave the camera in the bag at first and just take in the beauty around you. It can be quite rewarding and makes your shots more memorable when you finally see them.
