This photo was taken on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe about an hour from where I reside in Reno.Time
This was probably around 2 am after having shot for about 4 hours around the east shore.Lighting
The moon was about 80% illuminated and I added a little bit of light painting (roughly half the exposure) to the face of the rock with a Fenix flashlight.Equipment
Sigma 10-20 3.5ex, Nikon d7000 and an Oben tripod with a cheapo cable releaseInspiration
I had actually set out on this particular night to shoot Venus at one of it's brightest points in the year, but it had already set behind me over Tahoe's mountains. After shooting quite a few photos along the shore, I decided to give Bonsai Rock another go. As the moon was setting, I saw a really good opportunity here and jumped into the water about chest deep (it wasn't warm). I spent the ride home pretty damp.Editing
This was a relatively mellow edit...a little bit of brush work to bring out the shape in the rock and the typical night sky corrections that I've come to use over my experience. In my camera bag
A sturdy tripod, shutter release and a flashlight are my number one things. I also travel with a pair of waders now.Feedback
Go out of your way to get into an area most wouldn't. I make it a point to try to not shoot a scene in a way I've ever seen it done before. A lot of this involves scrambling rocks or getting into the water, but to me, that's the most fun aspect of photography. Walking away from a situation that no one has with a shot is super exhilarating to me.
