Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a hill in the middle of nowhere so I could have that clean environment without distractions.

Time

It was mother's day and I had to meet up with my mum for lunch. Because I also had plans for the day I was on kind of a tight schedule and wanted to create the image before lunch. So I had about 2 hours to drive to the location, walk there, take a couple of images, walk back, drive home. I was a bit late, but it wasn't that bad. At least I got a nice shot.

Lighting

This was done without any special lighting. It was a cloudy day, so it was perfect for available light outdoor pictures. Since this is a self portrait, I also wasn't able to use a reflector.

Equipment

For this image I only used my Canon 600D, 50mm lens, tripod and a little ladder to raise myself a bit up in the air. Oh and of course my remote triggers. I couldn't do any of my self portraits without them.

Inspiration

I had that kind of image in my had for a quite long time. I wanted those yellowish tones to give a strange and surreal mood to the image. I also wanted to keep it simple. I actually thought of it without trees and short grass, But I actually really liked that treeline and there wasn't much I could do about the grass, so I took it and made the best out of it.

Editing

I mostly tweaked the colors, to give the green tones more of a yellowish appeal. Besides some dodge and burn and a couple of cosmetic retouching it is pretty much as it was.

In my camera bag

My go to lens is the 85mm 1.8 which I absolutely love for it's insane sharpness and beautiful creamy bokeh. I love taking portrait shots, so there's no way around that lens. My second most common lens is the 50mm 1.8 which was my first additional lens. I also have a Tokina 11-16mm which I use for filming with a steady cam and also for some people photography. At least if it gets really tight or I want some fancy angle.

Feedback

Get an image of what you want to capture in your head. Then go to the location and play around with camera angles, lenses, poses and light until you find the perfect setup to get the shot you've imagined before. As long as you have an Idea and are willing to spend time and energy to get it as you imagined it, it'll turn out great!
