Location
I took this photo on a playground in my home town in southern Bavaria, Germany. The model was laying on the ground while I was standing on the backrest of a bench, awkwardly leaning over her and trying not to fall.Time
This image was created in October 2014. We had a really beautiful golden autumn this year, so I had to take the chance and get some images using these vibrant brown and orange tones. Unfortunately I had to shoot around noon and couldn't use the golden hour.Lighting
Against my usual style, this photo was taken only with available light. Since I took it in bright sunlight, I had to fight with the harsh lighting conditions. Luckily I had someone with me to hold a diffusor and cast a smooth and even shadow on her face.Equipment
For this shot I used my Canon 600D (T3i) together with the nifty Canon 50mm 1.8. Because of that fixed focal length, I had to climb the backrest of the bench in order to get the framing I wanted.Inspiration
I simply love the vibrant colors of autumn! A friend of mine and fellow photographer created that amazing headpiece and allowed me to shoot it as well. It matched the colors of dry leafs and earth so well, that I really loved how the headpiece and the stuff laying on the ground instantly merged. I wanted to take a straight shot from above with eye contact, to create some sort of intimacy and romance in the image.Editing
Besides developing the RAW-file in Lightroom, I didn't do much. A little bit of skin retouching and cloning out little pieces of the mat the model was laying on was almost everything I did in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I don't own fancy equipment. I think it's not the equipment that takes good photos, it's the photographer. Of course, I'd also buy expensive stuff if I could afford it ;) I'm usually shooting on my good old Canon 600D, sometimes I can also use a 70D which I really like for the bigger size and weight - I'm tall and have big hands so it's more comfortable to me. Overall I still prefer my 600D in terms of intuitive operating. My go-to lens is the Canon 85mm 1.8 which I bought after I experienced some frustrating focussing issues with the 50mm 1.8, which missed the focus at least 50% of the time and ruined some great shots that way. I still like it though. I also have a bunch of speedlights, light stands, softboxes & umbrellas, tripod and reflector with me. Since I prefer doing conceptual shootings, It's no problem for me bringing a lot of equipment to the location.Feedback
Preproduction is key! Even if you're shooting whatever comes to your mind while being on the shoot, make sure you get everything right before you take the actual photo. Try to pose your model right and check your lighting. Find distracting things and remove them - like I asked my model to remove the staps of her top. It would've looked horrible with them. Sure, you can photoshop them out, but everything you can avoid doing in post by paying a little attention before will of course look more natural and save you a lot of time.
