Location
I live in Carson City, NV and this photograph was taken in my own front yard while me and my two youngest boys were cleaning (playing) up the leave from our tree in our front yard.Time
I remember it being the early afternoon and it was slightly overcast with some high thin clouds.Lighting
This was all natural light, no special lighting was used. I shoot primarily in manual mode so once the setting are to my liking I click away.Equipment
This was taken with my Canon EOS XSi Rebel camera using a 17-35mm lens. My aperture was set at F 5.6, ISO 100 and my exposure was 1/250 to stop the motion blur.Inspiration
My inspiration for this photograph came from my dog named mouse who wanted to join in with the boys as the played in the pile of leaves we made for them to jump in. The boys were covering each other up to their necks in leaves as mouse came over and climbed into one of their laps. They then covered her with leaves and to my surprise she just laid there in the leave all happy. So I couldn't pass up the moment and snap!Editing
I try and capture everything in camera so that post-processing is minimal. I use Adobe light room to do any initial adjustments that need to be made then I import the image into Adobe Photoshop and use a Topaz Labs plugin to finish the image so that the colors and vibrance of the image match as closely and I can get it to what I saw with my naked eye.In my camera bag
It might sounds odd but I usually carry two bags with me most of the time. One bag has my Pentax K20D with a 28-90mm lens and a 70-300mm lens and the other has my Canon XSi with a 18-55mm lens. I will occasionally carry other lens with me but in general those are what I carry. I also have a shoe mount flash I carry for my Pentax which is generally my primary camera.Feedback
While images like this can be setup from the beginning and staged to get a similar result I tend to try and find the candid moments in life. The true magic in an image like this is to capture it in that candid moment. I have been asked many times how did you get your dog to pose for that image? I would love to say I am just that great of a dog trainer, but I cannot claim that title. The reality of the matter is that I did not pose her it was something that she did on her own, I was just in the right moment and ready to shot at the right time. Some would say "well you just got really lucky". I would say to them while luck was a part of it indeed, however I was set and ready with camera in hand to be able to capture the image as it happened. So to me "luck" is when hard work, knowledge and being prepared come together in one great moment. So my advice to any who may be interested would be keep a camera handy and an eye open at all times. You never know what you may find or have happen right in front of you.
