Behind The Lens
Location
This photograph was taken in Carson city, NV at the Nevada state railroad museum.Time
I took this photograph in late afternoon so that I could get the sun behind the steam engine as it travelled on its short track around the Nevada state railroad museums yard.Lighting
I wanted to get the sUnited just right behind the train as it passed by, so I took a series of shots before I captured this final image. I wanted the sun burst behind the train as it passed to give a sense of power to the image.Equipment
This photograph was taken using a Canon xsi with a standard 18-55mm lens. I did not use a tripod for this image, I handheld the camera using settings F11 ISO100 at 1/160.Inspiration
I have always found trains fascinating and watching an old steam engine run in the middle of winter is so much fun. This train museum is only a couple miles from my home, so I often hear the whistle of the train on the weekends. On this particular day me and my wife took our kids to go ride the train when this scene presented itself to me.Editing
I did some minor adjustment to the image in lightroomph and photoshop to make the train and sunburst more prominent in image. In my camera bag
I normally carry two cameras with me in my bag, one is this canon xsi with its standard lens and the other is a Pentax K20D. I have a standard 28-90mm lens, a 70-300mm lens and a 18-200mm lens for my pentax. I also carry two speelights.Feedback
My advice for others in capturing a similar image would be get out there in the world. Look for anything that may catch your attention and when you do make sure you have your camera at the ready.
