Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Ndutu Wildlife Area in Tanzania, Africa

Time

This was taken mid-afternoon.

Lighting

There was nothing special about the lighting. Just a typical sunny African afternoon.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 7D with a Canon 100-400L lens from the safari jeep using a bean bag for stability.

Inspiration

We were driving and came upon a pride of about 12 lions gathered around some puddles in a large open dry riverbed area. They were all lying around and just resting, when this lioness got up and walked away from the rest of the group. I asked our guide to follow her until I got the right angle and caught the shot. She jumped over the puddle a minute later. These were really just puddles, but they provided some nice reflections.

Editing

I always shoot raw so all my photos are processed in Lightroom. This one was also run through Topaz Clarity for nature. I did not use Photoshop.

In my camera bag

My normal equipment is either my Canon Mark III or the Canon &d Mark II. My standard lenses are the Canon 100-400L, Canon 28-300L, Canon 17-40L and the Sigma Art lens 24-105. I like to carry a travel tripod,remote trigger as well as a set of Lee ND filters and a polarizer filter. No filters were used for this photograph however. I also carry lens wipes and an air blower to help keep the lenses clean.

Feedback

Just wait for the moment. We watched these lions sleep for a long while before one got up and moved off for a better shot. Also, when you isolate something, it sometimes makes a better image. These were really puddles that were nothing to look at when taking in the whole area with the pride of lions. The bigger photo was just a muddy riverbed with a couple large puddles-it was when we followed the lioness and zoomed in on her that the shot became the photograph. And have fun-just being there to see these animals is incredibly special-enjoy it.
