This picture was taken at the Place des Arts in Montreal, Canada. This hallway was in use for an installation art called Charabia built by the Graphics eMotion group. In a nutshell, the installation involved a wall of screens with a continuously changing background imagery and interconnected to interactive speakers that connect to it's environment. The installation is said to represent the challenge of communication and dialogue between individuals, cultures and people through language and explores the relationship of art with technology and new media.Time
This was taken in the evening around 7pm on my way to taking the subway back home after a photowalk in downtown Montreal. The time of day was perfect since it was just after rush hour, which allowed me to get great shots of single individuals such as this one.Lighting
The lighting of this installation art was constantly changing but always behind the subjects allowing me to try different exposures for different effects. I favoured for a slight underexposure to get a crisp silhouette.Equipment
The picture was taken using a handheld Nikon D600 camera with a 24mm prime lens.Inspiration
I tend to take photowalks whenever I have a chance. In this case I had some time to kill coming out of work so I went looking for a nice spot at the Place des Arts center in Montreal to capture some passer-byers. I found and immediately fell in love with this location and spent over an hour capturing people as they walked by. This woman in particular I noticed from a distance as she was screaming class. She had amazing posture and a classy walk to her and I knew this was the shot I was waiting for. I pretty much had my camera on burst during her walk-by and I knew before I got home that this was the shot I wanted to showcase. I was not disappointed.Editing
Post processing on this one was pretty simple. My ISO setting was pretty high (3200) so I used Topaz DeNoise to reduce the grain. I also used Topaz Clarity, as I usually do, to add a bit more crisp contrast and depth. I slightly desaturated the golden hue using Adobe Lightroom. In my camera bag
The equipment I carry varies from one day to the next depending on what I plan on shooting and the time of day. I typically lug around my Nikon D600 with a 18-35mm wide angle lens, which I carry using a hand grip. On an evening or night walk, I'll also carry my Vanguard AltaPro and TBH ball head, with a remote trigger and maybe my 105mm f2.8. I also always carry along a spare battery, which I learned from experience.Feedback
With regards to this picture, I can only suggest exploring the city you live in. I've always loved playing tourist in the city I spend the most time in. As much as I feel I know Montreal, every time I choose new roads to walk or corners to turn I find something new and exciting to explore.
