Love this. Most photographers would have composed the shot with more space in front of the subject rather than behind - this is much more interesting. Beautiful lighting. I especially like the very subtle details in the shadow areas - just enough that the mind fills in what the viewer is not seeing. Well done!

Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo in the studio at my school, I'm always trying to do something creative involving my children and the things they love to do.

Time

This photo was taken later in the evening, my kids and I had been in the studio for a few hours trying different lighting setups. My daughter was about done with the whole thing by the time I got this shot.

Lighting

I was trying to recreate stage lighting. I wanted it to look as though my daughter was standing on stage, bathed only in a spotlight during her big violin solo. I used a single strobe with a tight grid, I used the modeling light to paint light where I wanted it, then I used the strobe to recreate a distant spotlight.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7000 with an 18-55 f3.5, my camera was mounted on a large studio stand with a single strobe mounted very high up.

Inspiration

I was trying to get a grasp on restricted light photographs, I have always loved pictures that highlight the subject and let everything else of less importance completely fall away.

Editing

I brought the black point down quite a bit for this shot as well as increasing the shadows. I also oversaturated the colors for a more dramatic effect.

In my camera bag

I always carry my D7000 with my 18-55 and my 55-200, I have recently acquired a 28-70mm f2.8 that I have been shooting almost exclusively recently.

Feedback

Don't use more light than necessary to get the shot you are looking for, a lot of the time less can be more, don't be afraid to experiment. I had no idea what it would give me when I mounted a strobe about 10 feet in the air, just try anything till you see something you like.
