Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is from one of the first senior session I ever did. I try to include photos of our surroundings to make in an entire experience. The road was a ways out of town, but I could tell my clients were a little nervous When I laid in the middle of the road!

Time

Golden hour! In Minnesota when this was taken that was about 8pm. Always golden hour. It's kind of my jam!

Lighting

When I use golden hour, I think the light have rich warm tones that I achieve in camera that I can any other time! This light is like magic. The funniest thing was that I didn't even know about "golden hour" when I took this photo. It was a weird combination of beginners luck and creative intuition.

Equipment

I used my very first DSLR camera, the canon rebel T3. My canon 50mm 1.8 rocked it out. That little lens really does its job!

Inspiration

My client was kind of a free spirit. She showed up in this fringe vest and printed pants that had elephants on them. The flower we brought from another location because I had stuck it in her hair for a few shots. It just seemed fitting. When we were finished with it, I took this photo because it reminded me so much of her and thought it would be great in her senior gallery.

Editing

This on I didn't do too much too. Maybe exposure and contrast adjustments, but that's about it!

In my camera bag

Now I've grown up a little and an armed with an arsenal of canon cameras and equitment. I use a canon Mark iii for the majority of my portraits. The lenses I use the most are my 85mm, 70-200, and 24-70. I also love my fish eye for fun shots!

Feedback

I think one thing to definitely learn is lighting. When to go out, what equitment will you need for that time of day, play with the shadows... Another thing is to play up what's around you! I didn't plan the colors, I was just present enough to notice that the flower matched the median of the road. Be part of your shoots! You're not just a photographer, you're a creative designer, producer, director, and supporting actor. Get out there and work it!
