I was with a friend, who wanted to take pictures himself at an old fabric building in Hannover ( it's called "Conti"). He had a model with him and I really had the urge to take some selfportaits this day, so I brought my tripod with me. We couldn't get inside the building because it was being watched, so I saw this huge puddle and decided to use it for the picture.Time
It was a warm summer day and it was in the middle of the day. A few other people were there as well, because the fabric building itself actually attracts a lot of people. Shortly after I began taking pictures the police came along, to check whether people were trying to get inside the building and I got some very funny looks. And another man asked me, if I was doing an art project for university or something like that. He went away shaking his head after I told him, that I was just doing this for myself. Guess he couldn't believe anyone would sit in a giant puddle for some pictures.Lighting
It was a sunny day and there were absolutely no clouds to be seen anywhere.Equipment
I used an old, pretty unstable tripod, that broke a couple of months ago. A Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 50mm f1.8, which also broke a couple of months ago. Let's hope for the best with my dearest Nikon D7000!Inspiration
At that time I was really struggeling with myself and with the way I took pictures. I used to do a lot of selfportraits in order to deal with some traumatic events in my life. But I was getting more and more unhappy with the pictures I took. They felt very repetitive and I needed to change something about this. This picture was actually the first selfportrait I took outside. Every single one I did before that, was shot inside. So that day all I wanted was to create something that wasn't the typical selfportrait. I didn't want my face to be the focal point of the picture. I wanted it to be simple, clean and anonymous.Editing
This was another first time experience when it comes to editing. This is actually the first picture I edited using a testversion of lightroom. In reality the puddle was not blue at all. The ground was sandy, so the water had the same color as the sand and I needed to play a lot with the yellow tones to get this right. In my camera bag
I always take my Nikon D7000 with me, a Nikkor 50 mm f1.8 (luckily I already have a new one...shooting without a 50 mm in my bag would be so strange), a Nikkor 85mm f1.8 and a Sigma 10-20 mm f3.5, which I rarely use to be quite honest.Feedback
Find yourself a very huge puddle and just do your thing! Don't worry about the strange looks you might get. It's about expressing yourself and about having fun! For me it's been a freeing experience that really changed the way I take pictures.
