Behind The Lens
Location
The photo of the model was taken on the Pismo Beach pier in Pismo Beach, CA as part of the 2013 California Photo Festival. The clouds were taken a week prior also at Pismo Beach, CA.Time
The model shot was taken about an hour before sunset. I was concentrating on taking silhouettes so the low sun helped backlight the model.Lighting
The sun was setting behind and slightly to the right of the model and was low on the horizon. I postioned myself so the sun was backlighting the model.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5DmkII using a 70-200mm f/2.8L lens at 80mm.Inspiration
This photo was inspired by a tutorial I saw by Caras Ionut on drawing blades of grass and making a water reflection. I went through my collection of photos and found the model photo used here.Editing
This photo is almost all post-processing. The model was against a blue sky so i added the sunset clouds behind her. I then drew the grass using a brush with various shape dynamics to vary size, rotation, and shape. I then flipped the image and use the ripple filter in Photoshop to make the reflection. In my camera bag
Besides my Canon 5DmkII, I always have a 24-70mm f/2.8L and a 70-200mm f/2.8L when doing model shoots. I often carry other lenses as well, a 50mm f/1.4, 17-40mm f/4, and a 24-105mm f/4L. I also have 5-7 Pocket wizards and a Sekonic L-358 Light MeterFeedback
The most important thing when doing a composite like this is to make sure the lighting of your background sky matches the lighting on the model. In this case the sunset in the cloud image was coming from the lower right, which is exactly where the sun was when I shot the model.
