Location
Would you believe - in my own backyard. I am fortunate to live on a small acreage on the east coast of Australia. So many insects and animals to photograph.Time
This is my favourite photo of a bee I have taken. Early in the morning in summer. The sun still had not fully risen so the light was soft and perfect.Lighting
I wanted the focus to be on the beauty of the bee. So, even the light of soft and not too bright I decided to use a flash.Equipment
I used my Canon 600D with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 L Macro lens. Due to the morning light, and the desire for the bee to be the hero of the shot I used an inbuilt flash. Camera was mounted on a tripod, as is always best for macro shots, to prevent too much movement.Inspiration
I was just sitting enjoying the morning when I saw this little bee happily resting on the stalk of one of the orchids. I thought how simple and beautiful the image was.Editing
I cropped the image a little to take away some of the distractions. And fiddled a little with contrast. In my camera bag
I will have either my Canon 600D, 70D or 5D mkII camera. Usually two lenses appropriate to what I aim to photograph along with the relevant filters. Memories cards and batteries ( I always carry a spare of both of these) and a cleaning cloth.Feedback
Macro shots can be very frustrating. Just as you think you have the setting etc right - the little creature decides to move.I have found in most cases I try not to move around following the subject as this seems to make them a bit more skittish. I prefer to try to stay relatively still and I find the creature most times will venture back close to you (well not reaaly to you, more to whatever attracted them to that spot in the first place).
