Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Yellowstone National Park South of Madison at the Prismatic Spring

Time

I had stayed in the park all night taking photos of the Milky Way at different sites and was heading to Old Faithful to setup for a sunrise shoot there, when I stopped here for a rest just as it was starting to get light out and snapped this shot.

Lighting

The stark contrasts between the trees and the steam rising from the spring in the blue hour lighting caught my eye as I got out of the pickup.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon Z50 at the time with a 16-50mm kit lens at 21mm. An awesome, light, little camera for trips.

Inspiration

Although I was in a hurry to get to Old Faithful before sunrise the mystic view drew me to grab a few quick shots before heading to my next destination.

Editing

It was shot in RAW and edited in Lightroom. Added some Vibrance, Saturation and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

This trip I used the Z50 with two kit lens the 16-50mm and the 50-250mm lens. A neat little camera but I have moved up the Nikon Z line since with a Z7, Z7ii and a Z8. Most of my shooting now is with the Z8 and the Nikon Z 180-600 lens or with a Nikon s line 14-24 mm lens

Feedback

Yellowstone is an incredible place to shoot all kinds of landscapes and wildlife in a short amount of time for the beginner or seasoned pro. Keep a camera or 2 handy all the time with different lens, a lot of people are getting great shots with the newer phones. If you are looking for wildlife a spotting scope an awesome piece of equipment all the better with a phone or camera mount. Best thing is to get up very early and stay late to avoid the crowds but keep your eyes peeled and take your time because you can see a lot more going slow than racing place to place..
