Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Blind Bay on Rainy Lake, just north of Fort Francis, Ontario, Canada

Time

It was on an early morning boat trip into Blind Bay to see if I could get some video of otter playing. The way the sun's rays filtered thru the trees and colored the rising fog caught my eye.

Lighting

The sunrise color was awesome as it broke the horizon distorted by recent wildfires in the area. A cool fall morning fog hung over the water and was colored by the sunrays that filtered thru the trees.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon S6500 camera, freehand from a 16 ft Lund open fishing boat. no flash or supplemental light

Inspiration

On my way I watched the foggy landscape unfold around me. I did a double take when I saw the lighting in a small cove. I turned around to stop and soak in the beauty of the moment not realizing what a amazing shot it was until I downloaded the images onto my computer.

Editing

The only post processing that was done was on the camera itself. It was shot in super vivid mode, landscape mode, cropped and clarity

In my camera bag

Back then, I only used a camera that I could basically carry in my pocket while out fishing and boating the Nikon S6500 fit the bill. Since then I have worked my way thru a few Nikons including the D3400 and D7200. My go to cameras currently are a Nikon Z50 and Nikon Z7. With hopes to upgrade to the new Nikon Z9!

Feedback

The best camera and only one that counts is the one you have with you. Always go out armed with something even if its not the most expensive camera. Remember to take plenty of shots and never give up to early on a sunrise or sunset. Be patient as sometimes the colors evolve and just keep getting better especially after a sunset!. Very still late summer and early fall mornings are best. Go when the water is warmer than the air on cooler than normal mornings to catch some beautiful foggy sunrises along the lake. Start out well before sunrise, checkout small hidden bays with eastern exposures. As an added bonus you may even catch some wildlife in your scene. Weather it's with a pocket camera, your cell phone or the best camera you can afford you will be amazed when you've captured that perfect moment in time!
