Behind The Lens

Location

the photo was taken at the Montgomery Zoo in Montgomery, Alabama

Time

the photo was taken about 2:00 pm in November in 2020.

Lighting

it was a cloudy day in November. I prefer cloudy days to avoid battling the sun.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P900 with an 83X optical zoom.

Inspiration

I became a Montgomery zoo member during the pandemic and would visit the zoo about once a month. the offer exhibit is always fun because the two offers are always active regardless of the season. my shot was from above the enclosure looking down upon my friend the otter. each time I visit him he hears my camera lens cover clicking against my camera in the breeze and runs up to the wall, stands on his back legs, and stares at me with that wonderful, inquisitive look on his face .

Editing

nothing special. the otter was pretty much as is.

In my camera bag

I almost always carry a Cannon Rebel T6i with a 18-135mm lens. However, for wildlife close-ups, I grab the Nikon P900. Its lightweight allowing for minimal shake and offers great images.

Feedback

Get as close as you can get without jumping into the cage! I prefer to go on weekdays or when the weather is unfavorable to avoid crowds so I have the animals to myself and I don’t have to fight for position. Patience is important to get that perfect shot. sometimes I may stay with an animal for 15-30 minutes to get what I want, but certain days I know the animals might not cooperate. But there is always a next time.
