Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the open door of my kitchen (going onto the deck). Due to the lightning and rain I was inside the house.

Time

I took this photo around 3am, during the unexpected storm. This was the first big lightning storm in this area for a couple of decades.

Lighting

The lighting for this lightning pictures was all from the lightning!

Equipment

I was using a Sony A7RIV with a 24-105mm lens set at 24mm. Camera was on a tripod. Flash was natural electric, the lightning itself. f/16, ISO200, 15 second exposure.

Inspiration

Lightning is rare here. This was maybe the first lightning storm in a couple of decades.

Editing

Post processing consisted of trying to compensate for over exposure, cropping out the part of the sky where nothing was happening, color temperature correction, and removal of a telephone pole.

In my camera bag

Normally I just carry what I'm going to be using. But since I was at home I could go get more if I needed. The storm lasted for several hours and I grabbed a chair to sit on while running exposures and listened to music.
