Location
I was across the street(!!) from the Punta Gorda, FL Airport where there was an air show going on.Time
I shot this mid-afternoon on a cloudy/blah day but ended up liking the look of the sky for this composition.Lighting
Glad not to have had glaring sun as is typical for a Florida afternoon. This was taken at 1/500 sec at f/8.0, ISO 100.Equipment
I hand held my Canon 70 - 300 mm.Inspiration
I have seen fantastic photos of air shows by other photographers on VB. Thought I'd try to get a few good shots but was only able to be across the street from the event. Next year will be IN the airport to watch it!Editing
Mostly, I lightened the shadows and highlights but then slid the black clippings to the darkest to make more contrast between the clouds and the smoke from the plane. The composition needed a darker, more dramatic sky. I also raised the Clarity to 50 which is higher than what I might usually do.In my camera bag
I have 3 Canon Rebel bodies: one T3i and two T5i. I use 4 lenses: a 70-300mm, a 70-55mm zoom, a 10-18mm wide angle, and a 100mm macro. I have a Black Rapid dual strap which I really like as it allows me to carry 2 cameras without having to switch out the lenses. I have a MeFOTO tripod.Feedback
I do everything trial and error with lots of errors but that's how I learn, even if it's slowly. I also spend time in Lightroom, not necessarily trying to change the photo too much but trying to enhance the photo. I don't have advice specific to this shot but I would say don't be afraid to try different settings, different combinations, etc. Mostly, have fun!
