Location
This photo was taken along the Crystal River near Marble, CO. The road to the location is a 4WD access, or it is hiking access, I chose the drive.Time
I left my camping spot early (6:30 am), arrived at the location around 7:30 am.Lighting
The morning started out with promise, pretty clear skies initially. By the time I arrived at the spot, the clouds had moved in pretty rapidly, and it sort of neutralized all the colors. Because it was overcast, I knew I could leave the shutter open a little longer and not worry about overexposure (although I use a ND filter).Equipment
I use Sony Alpha a7II, and this particular shot I was using a Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 MF lens with a Gobe 10-stop ND filter. No flash, just natural lighting.Inspiration
I had seen images of this building when I first moved to CO back in 2000, it wasn't until 2019 that I was able to actually get out there to see it for myself. The building was built in 1892, and it was used as a pumphouse (power station) for the mine located on the opposite side of the river and halfway up the mountain. This was a pretty impressive feat to accomplish considering the era. In my opinion, the Crystal River pumphouse is the epitome of CO. The effort it would have taken those miners to haul their ore back to civilization would have been intense, and it is amazing that this building has lasted over a century under such harsh elements.Editing
The only post-processing I did was to increase the blackpoint, and lighten the shadows a bit, the rest is natural lighting and color. In my camera bag
I have grown accustomed to bringing at least two lenses with me, but since I just purchased a new camera bag, I can bring all of my gear without issues now. I really enjoy shooting in manual focus, and I have been pleased with the results of my earlier Rokinon lenses, so I have purchased several since I sold my previous camera. My list goes from a 50mm f/1.4 to a 20mm f/1.8 to a 12mm f/2.8 fisheye, all from Rokinon. The only AF lens I have is the kit lens that came with the camera (Sony Alpha a7II), and I haven't really used that one a whole lot. I tend to use the AF lens when I want to get a little higher zoom than the 50mm, but it's rare when that happens.Feedback
This is a location that requires some planning, and if you plan on driving, make sure your vehicle has high clearance and 4-Lo. Be prepared to go slow. This particular location has a small mining town close by, the owners have asked for donations to help cover the cost of repairs, and to help maintain the road in.
