Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a photo studio in San Leandro Ca.

Time

Pictures was taken about 11am during a 4 hour shoot. In this section of the shoot we were doing steampunk.

Lighting

Strobe to the left, a strobe to the right, and one way up above.

Equipment

I used a full frame camera with a 24-105mm lens and, as noted above, 3 strobe lights. All full frame cameras that have come out in the past few years would have been fine for this shoot.

Inspiration

I consider myself as a Science, Science Fiction, Fantasy and Art Nude photographer. In this set we (and I do mean we, Taylor and I work together on images) wanted to make a steampunk set using some inexpensive bird-beak masks I found (they are in my FB feed next to this image). The red cloak is just a piece of red cloth. The hat is a witches hat. The lantern is an inexpensive one from Amazon.

Editing

The post-processing of Taylor involved lightening up the dark side of her face. For the candle lantern I brightened up the candle and added the rays The background was/is a full black cyclorama set. What makes it different is a texture layer of broken ice. I made ice in a plastic box and when I emptied the box upside down the ice broke (I wanted it to break). I then photographed the broken ice with white plastic underneath. I added this as a texture layer, dropped the opacity and moved the ice photo around until it was at a good location.

In my camera bag

I generally take just the equipment I need for a shoot and maybe a spare. In this case: camera, lens, backup lens, pocket wizard, spare batteries and model release.

Feedback

Work with your model(s). Get their inputs, suggestions, ideas. Be sure to give your model the agreed number of images, quickly. I find I do my best work with models I've worked with before. Like tomorrow when I doing a Spartan themed shoot with a model I've worked with half a dozen times before.
