Behind The Lens

Location

I have taken this photo at Lezíria, Tagus River Estuary Natural Reserve.

Time

This is one of my favourite bird photos. We have decided to get early and visit this region to learn more from one of the largest bird sanctuary's on Europe. It was near midday of an early spring Sunday, we were preparing to leave the area to eat something nearby and at facing the side of the dirt path it was an fence with this Yellow Wagtail on it.

Lighting

It was an bright sunny day without clouds, to take some landscape shoots it was an terrible day, but to do some bird watching and to exploring an new region it worth every minutes spend.

Equipment

I have used my Canon 5D MK III with an Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Dg Os Hsm Contemporary (Canon EF? mount) lens, no other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I was looking for birds and what caught my attention in this scene was the contrast of the colours between the blue from the sky and the yellow of the bird, and when i get near enough the bird as put it self in an unusual position and become undecided if it was staying or leaving.

Editing

I always use some post-processing, in this photo it was only to reduce some contrast between the shadows and highlights to gain some detail, added some vibrance to the colours and some clarity.

In my camera bag

For this day i bring only my Canon 5D MK III with an EF 24-105mm F4 and an Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Dg Os Hsm Contemporary (Canon EF? mount). Normally i bring more gear such as my Canon EF 16-35mm F4 lens, Lee Filters and an Manfrotto BeFree tripod.

Feedback

This shoot its no example of preparation, it was all about improvisation and luck to be honest. The only point that i can highlight to take some shoots like its to know well your equipment and be prepared to grab the camera and enjoy the moment.
