Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken a few steps from our house, where the hill goes down. In the background you can see the hill on the other side of the valley going up. Sometimes you don't have to go far for good pictures. Maybe the best locations are just where you live.

Time

It was evening and we did some shots using the evening sun which was fading behind the hill slowly and the golden glow was just perfect. Even if you don't see the colors on this picture, you can see the character of the light which is very smooth and perfect for the skin and body shape.

Lighting

As I wrote above, it was against the evening sunlight. It was sundown and we used the golden hour to have a smooth and good shaping light for the body. Because we shot against the sun, we could achieve this glow in her hair around her face. The shadows are perfect to shape the face and so the eyes stand out. The hill in the back was a few hundred meters away, so we could have a nice bokeh even with the aperture not fully opened. This increases sharpness and contrast in the image.

Equipment

This picture was shot with a 85mm Sigma Art Lens and my Nikon D800e. Thats all, I always try to shoot with nothing more than my camera in the first place.

Inspiration

Oh thats difficult, I wanted to take some portraits of her, because I think she has a wonderful face. And the long hair are perfect to shoot in slightly windy conditions ;)

Editing

Yes, of course, post processing is a big part of photography these times. I Increased the brightness in the center of the image and with dodge and burn I worked out the shapes of the face a bit.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D800e, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm with me. Very often I have a reflector with me but most of the times it ends as a seating for the models when I want them to sit on the ground. Sometimes its good as a rain shelter. And a few times I use it to lighten um shadows and to cause shadows. But not in this case, in this picture I didn't use it anyway.

Feedback

Yeah, I think you just have to look for an area where you have much space to the background and a sun going down behind your model. If there's no wind, ask a friend to make some with the reflector. Look that there's not a straight line in the model, if the lines are building a cross its very static. Tilt the head slightliy to one side to avoid this. And it looks more interesting for this kind of shots. Give the model something dark to wear, so you have a good contrast to the face.
