Behind The Lens

this was taken at the famous tunnel view, viewpoint of Yosemite Valley

Lighting

I traveled from Canon Beach, OR while on a landscape trip all night to get here in the morning to scout my shot. I did some test shots and liked what I saw, then hit the forest for a nap hoping the sunset would turn the granite walls on fire. When it was time to go get setup clouds came in and it starting raining in the high elevations. I played around with my new graduated ND filters and stacked 2 together so I could do a bit of a long shutter to blur the waterfall. The sun peaked out for a second and kissed the trees, I took the shot, then the sun disappeared and Half Dome disappeared in the rain at the same time, and my day was over. Its easy to get bummed out when you don't quite get the shot you have planned and I didn't particularly like the shot in color, but I decided to try a black and white and loved it!

Equipment

Sony a99, Ziess 24-70, Lee ND Filters, Nodal Ninja, Gitzo Carbon Fiber Tripod, Gitzo Ball Head, Vello Freewave release

Inspiration

The last time I went to Yosemite with family, I didn't have the time to get any classic photos, so I wanted to take the time to get a classic view. I love Yosemite and the history, and Ansel Adams. Yosemite has a lot to offer people with a variety of interests.

Editing

Just simple color correction and a black and white addition

In my camera bag

Body, 24-70, 14mm, 135mm, nodal ninja pano head for multi-shot panoramics, good tripod, ND filters, a good polorizer for water.

Feedback

Be able to adapt to changing lighting and weather situations. Know your equipment and when you get a weather "lemon" make the most of it and capture something great. Also with knowing your equipment, make sure your only variables are with light, weather, locations, and vantage points. Don't let your gear be in the way, don't wish you had a tripod or a better one, or sharper glass, or a good release. You don't have to go broke with gear but get what's important, but at the same time don't bring the whole gear shelf with you. I have mainly 3 different cases/bags in my vehicle and keep everything in a large road case to keep it safe, then pack only what I need for the shot, so at least if you forget something you can get it from the car instead of drive home.
