Behind The Lens

Location

Mono Lake, South Tufa.

Time

Late afternoon.

Lighting

This would have been harsh mid-day sun, but the clouds and approaching thunderstorm worked like magic taming that harsh sunlight.

Equipment

Canon 60D with Canon 18-55mm IS on a tripod.

Inspiration

There are 2 things that I love in this photo, dramatic stormy skies and the strange tufa formations of Mono Lake.

Editing

I used Photoshop for the basic stuff, and the used Nik's Silver Effex Pro to convert to black and white.

In my camera bag

This was prior to my switch to the Olympus M43 format. I had my Canon 60D and 18-55mm IS lens as well as my Tamron 70-200 f/2.8.

Feedback

Watch the weather and time of day. While sunrise and sunset are usually best for that dramatic golden light, a cloudy/stormy sky can be equally dramatic. My original image was shot in color, but I love black and white, and this one just seem to call out to me for the conversion. There are some wonderful tones and textures here. Give black and white a try, you may really like it!
