Location
This is Mono Lake's South Tufa Reserve.Time
Just before sunset.Lighting
The cloud formations were fantastic even before the sun started to set. Sometime you just don't know if a sunset is going to be a hit or a miss. This time I was sure that it would be a hit. As time went on and the sun started to set the show just got better.Equipment
I was still using my Canon gear at the time (60D) on a tripod.Inspiration
The location by itself is inspiring. Mono Lake can be a wonderful place for photography any time of day, but can really be special at sunrise or sunset.Editing
Yes, I generally post process all of my photos and this is no exception. The exact details escape me, but I use a combination of Photoshop and Perfect Effects for all of my RAW files. In my camera bag
At the time I had my Canon 60D and assortment of Canon Lenses, along with my very heavy tripod. Since then I've reduced my photo equipment footprint and shoot with smaller M43 Olympus equipment and most recently the wonderfully versatile Panasonic FZ1000.Feedback
Since this was done at sunset, my usual advice of getting your butt out of bed doesn't apply. In this case, you need to be on site and ready to go well before sunset. If you are at a popular place like Mono Lake, be sure to bring your patience with you. It's amazing how quickly it can get crowded, and how rude other photographers can be. In spite of this, pick your spot but don't forget to look around you, including behind you. You may find something has changed with the lighting and turned a blah scene into something exciting!
