This was shot at LACMA LA - through the front Window of the cafe.Time
Late afternoon sun was pretty much down past magic hour.Lighting
Earlier the creative director stopped and wanted me to shoot through a window, any window to copy a shot I had done before. I said it wasn't doable as the sun was high up over head facing down directly down at the window ( we had no crew with flags or diffusion). She actually was mildly put off as she thought I just didn't want to take the shot ( an issue with some creative directors that don't have a photography background. After 2 hours I said it was a really good time to go back and she was stoked and really helped manage us getting a bunch or beautiful shots ( a hundred or so worked and the color one's were/are gorgeous), high contrasts, big stone background, and the glass was nice and shootable. This was for a good company for the owner of Kind Traveler Sean, a non-profit and unique start-up.Equipment
5d Mark II and looks like my Zeiss 35mmInspiration
the architecture, and Sean's background - he was raised with a large family by 2 blind parents in Hawaii. I wanted to do right by him specifically. His ink work was similar to my style of ink and I wanted to shoot it accordingly.Editing
Just upped the contrast slightly and sharpened it to compensate for shooting through the window. The RAWs on these are probably all printable, total luck with some knowledge...In my camera bag
Presently I"m full freelance in San Diego but I have to be able to shoot everything so my bag is full, ha; Canon 5d Mark III and nd a backup Mark II that just keeps. going. Lenses: Canon 50mm 1.2, Canon 70-200mm USM II, Zeiss distagons 18mm and 35mm. Silver and gold reflector foldable, Largle collapsable reflector + diffusion. I use the Holdlfast Harness with everything. Zeiss and Holdfast as brands can handle my brutality with gear in general (seriously, from the jungle to avenues and alleyways). Canon bodies as well - no joke the mark 2 has been cracked down the center of the body for 2 years and still keeps shooting ( you can see inside it).Feedback
Light is your friend and enemy, locations are built on time of day, look at things tonally for color but also know that some shots can work in B&W that didn't work in color. Consider shooting farther away if you can't avoid reflection or the mirror effect. If it's guerrilla style shooting, buy something like a coffee it helps with staff or security and it's plain nice to do. Also use hand signals to communicate with the model, it's faster and keeps the frustration down when you can't hear each other separated by space and glass
