Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in La Jolla @ the beach Marine Street.

Time

It was mid-afternoon.

Lighting

Because the time of the day was mid-late afternoon there was so much light - most swimsuit seems to be shot in upper number apertures 4, 8 and up. I really wanted bokeh for the shore break so I had to lay quite a bit with my setting - I only shoot manual. It says different on the photo info on the VB page but it looks lower her legs and the sand are dropping off a bit or getting creamier

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark II, Zeiss 35mm 2.0 (I'm pretty sure) no flash but a slight silver+gold bounce just fading or brushing past her not right on her...

Inspiration

She wasn't a swimsuit model particularly, more lifestyle at that time but we were clicking so the vibe, colors, the shore break was inspiring.

Editing

The RAW is pretty good but I had to edit the swimsuit bottoms (I'm a wardrobe stylist as well) and kinda' messed up. I was worried the bottoms might be a tad see-through so I had her where other black bottoms underneath the suit. I had to photo shop the lines of the other suit out. Probably upped the clarity and played with contrast in LR, that's was my modus back then.

In my camera bag

Canon 5d Mark II backup duck taped around it's body because it's got a crack where you can see the insides but it won't stop going, a MarkIII 5D as my main, Canon 1.2 50mm, Canon 70-200USM II, Zeiss 35mm Distagon 2.O, Zeiss 18mm Distagon. Reflector with a silver/gold combined side always.

Feedback

I recommend primes in the beginning of one's foray into photography. It teaches use to compose more fluidly and boldly composing shots by using your body at different heights and angles - like film (or good film) you'll push rather than zoom, you'll track rather than pan, giving more of a connection and cinematic view of subjects. Sometimes telephotos put you on one height plane and you see photographers never moving their bodies much like a tripod, no climbing, or crawling, etc...that being said a good telephoto is needed to catch subjects unaware or for sports photography or even for a super extreme DOF....just the primes in the beginning teach you to move... Learning to style things, food, wardrobe, sets will help be a working photographer as well but it is a hard and diverse toolbox of skillsets
